What is biodynamic agriculture?
(Text by Marco Serventi, www.agricolturabiodinamica.it)
Applied around the world since 1924 by companies of every size and type, it starts from the basis that the farm is a real living being closed loop, inserted into the largest living cosmic organism whose underlying influences. The biodynamic farmer knows these influences and therefore adopt a practical method that promotes, with the result of having viable and fertile and healthy products. And injection of knowledge that is offered to complement the agronomic culture officer, in a spirit of renewal and determine the most ethical and aesthetic, and that encourages a new professionalism of the farmer, conscious and responsible.
The three principles of Biodynamics are:
1) maintain feritility of the earth;
2) make healthy plants so they can withstand the illnesses and parassits
3) produce the highest quality food possible.
Operational instruments
The biodynamic farmer's most important operational tools are: crop rotation, the biodynamic preparations, composting, lunar and planetary planting and cultivation operations, non-destructive working of the soil, a quality fertilization through green manure (sovescio) and fertilizer with compost treated with biodynamic preparations.
One of the basic concepts of biodynamic is, in fact, that of farm with a "closed circle", a farm organization in which little or nothing is the provision of materials and energy from the outside. In this way the farm is able to gather from their organization almost all the means of production (seeds, fertilizers, substances for protection of plants, etc..) reducing to a minimum what is needed from the outside (diesel, mechanical, etc.).. If the socio-economic context today does not allow a company to be a fully closed circle, this is possible by a collaboration between local companies that together may also partially compensate for their individual deficiencies.
